If Iggy Pop, Ronnie Asheton and the boys taught us anything, it’s that Motor City musicians don’t necessarily have to be able to play like Rush, but when you step foot on a Detroit stage, you’d better bring it and you sure as hell better mean it. The Ruiners recognize this. Rick, Nina, Rob, Justin and Liz leave every ounce of themselves on every stage that they perform on to the point that, look closely and you’ll see a Ruiners-shaped sweat silhouette on the well-worn wood. People don’t go home thinking, “the Ruiners were quite good tonight,” they go home and dream of the band members – naughty, sleazy dreams. The Ruiners infect you, in the greatest possible way. They’re like rock ‘n’ roll crabs – you just can’t shake ‘em. The question is, how do you harness that energy and put it on a record? Producer Tino Gross figured it out. Set the band up live in the studio and try to knock each song out in one take. Whatever happens, happens. That unpredictability, that delicious, sexy volatility, is what makes this band so great and now it has an album that its reputation deserves.
